SHALLAWAY – Newfoundland and Labrador Youth in Chorus wins top marks on second round competition in Béla Bartok International Choral Competition, Debrecen, Hungary, July 24 – 30, 2012
July 28, 2012 – After advancing through the first round of one of the most prestigious choral competitions in the world yesterday, Shallaway – Newfoundland and Labrador Youth in Chorus enjoyed another incredible performance earlier today, completing the competition with highest marks in the equal voice category at the 25th International Béla Bartok Choral Competition in Debrecen, Hungary. Shallaway’s Camerata Ensemble was celebrated with not one, but three standing ovations.
While there were no first place awards in the children’s choir, youth mixed choir, or equal voice category, of all the children’s, mixed voice and youth choirs competing, Camerata received the second highest marks overall – a true honor.
The secondary students, aged between 13 and 18 years, have prepared a wide ranging repertoire as part of their participation in the competition, in addition to several test pieces assigned by the Bartok organization.
Artistic Director, Kellie Walsh, said the members of Camerata are ecstatic with their performance.
