Winston-Salem State University Choir 2014 Concert Tour of South Africa
In May, the Winston-Salem State University Choir went on a tour of South Africa. The group traveled from Johannesburg to Cape Town, including visits to Pilanesberg National Park and the Oprah Winfrey Leadership Academy. Here are a couple of remarks from tour participants:
“I returned to the United States with not only a greater sense of appreciation for my circumstances, but with a new fervor for my craft. As a singer, I felt enriched by the music of South Africa and the passion that the South African singers displayed. The sights and emotions, the culture and history, and even the tastes we experienced in Johannesburg, Pilanesberg, and Cape Town are ones that we could never have gotten anywhere else and for that I am truly grateful.” Simone Price, Student Conductor

“The WSSU visit to the Oprah Winfrey Leadership Academy was truly a highlight of the tour. The girls at the Academy are unbelievably passionate, energetic and brilliant, and they were one of the best audiences I’ve ever encountered. Their reactions to the choir’s singing were so real and vibrant that the energy in the room could hardly be contained.
Spending time with them after the concert was equally inspiring. Both the WSSU singers and the girls at the OWLA share a common goal of living excellent, productive and significant lives, so their interactions were almost unbearably exciting to watch. “ David Tang, Director, Firebird Arts Alliance, tour sponsor
