Berea College Concert Choir gives an informal recital in Sagrada Familia in Barcelona, Spain
Spain and Portugal
The Iberian Peninsula has a wealth of performing opportunities and a wide range of summer music festivals. Venues range from majestic cathedrals to state of the art concert halls, castle courtyards and outdoor town squares. In the heat of the summer many performances take place in well-appointed outdoor venues. Just be aware that concerts (and meals) start very late!
“I’d been to Spain in 1999 as a member of the Duquesne University Chamber Singers, but it was the last week of a four-week tour (those were the days!) and was frankly a bit of a blur. I returned in the summer of 2010 with another college group, the University of Southern Maine Chamber Singers. The group visited Ronda, Seville, Cordoba and Grenada, and I joined them for the for the latter two. Wow! The very hour I arrived, I found myself standing inside a Catholic cathedral that is inside of a mosque. Talk about culture shock – but the good kind. The Moorish influence that Andalusia’s former Arab rulers had on the region is evident everywhere and it lends a certain uniqueness and even an air of mystery to the surroundings. Combine that with remarkable affordability, extraordinary acoustics and to-die-for food (hello, tapas), and this region verges on perfection.”
