"When I traveled to Spain to study abroad in college, I didn’t want to miss out on playing violin in an orchestra for a semester, and so I joined the Youth Orchestra of Salamanca. With this ensemble, I had the opportunity to meet young Spanish musicians, learn Spanish classical repertoire, and tour around the country. When I struggled with the language, playing music was a reprieve from my linguistic difficulties and a way to connect and communicate with my Spanish peers in a deeper, non-verbal way. One of my best memories with the orchestra was performing Brahms’ German Requiem alongside a German choir in the Old Cathedral of Salamanca. Years later, I took a Mexican youth orchestra on a tour of France, where I delighted in witnessing young French and Mexican musicians experience this exquisite cultural-musical connection for the first time."
